TELESTATS "Jupiter Communications Booms With Online Market" -- "Jupiter Communications said its latest survey indicates the number of subscribers to consumer online services will rise 32.5 percent this year, from 3.9 million to 5.2 million, while revenues will grow 27.9 percent from $549 million to $702 million." Also included is a quote from the owner of Delphi that "his service, now owned by Rupert Murdoch, will be the largest in the nation in 12-18 months." (Rots r Ruck!) Thanks to Anton Hein for this one. Newsbytes, Mar 10 '94 "US Companies Double Spending On Computers, and It Pays Off" -- findings show "information services (IS) spending boosts a company's output (or reduces costs) about six times as much as the same amount spent on production workers." Another heavy quote: "One information-services employee could be substituted on average for six non-IS employees without affecting output." Christian Science Monitor, Mar 8 '94, p9. "Sprint To Play Key Leadership Role In Next-Generation Internet" -- notes that the Internet is now "growing at an estimated rate of 20 percent a month." PRNewswire, Mar 10 '94. -- also from Anton Hein. Boardwatch magazine runs an annual contest for its readers and collects survey data in the process. The results are always a telling indicator of what drives the serious BBS scene. For example, 58% are DOS users with 33% using Windows and only 3% Macintosh. That seems to fit what I've experienced in the public board sector. "User-hostile" environments, typical online fare, seem to be an alluring challenge for these types. 29.5% are in the 30-39 year-old bracket followed by 25% who are 40-49 and 23% who are 20-29. After that there is quite a gap before the 50-59 and 10-19 groups that are about tied at 9%; interesting, eh? The most valued online resources were downloads and e-mail. A full 52% of this crowd do not use commercial online services. Of the remainder that did, 19% use CompuServe, 12% America Online, and 11% on Prodigy. Delphi and GEnie each only attracted about 2.5% of the readers. 72% of those who used commercial online services used only one service. 20% used two and only 5% used three. 54% used 14.4 modems leaving 26% at 2400 and only 9% at 9600. Only 11% of the respondents were female. Boardwatch, Mar '94, p39. HANDSHAKE Wack in lpwilson@aol.com to reach Luke Wilson of Gospel Truths Ministries in Grand Rapids. NUREL INTERNET LISTSERV AA17895; Wed, 9 Mar 1994 included the following remarks from Steve Hayes, (Editorial Department, University of South Africa): When I was first absorbing the sociology of religion (early to mid seventies), sociologists used the term "cult" to mean a loosely knit network of people with common spiritual interests. Then, as the mass media picked up on a new, more pejorative, definition, gradually sociologists came to use the term "cult" as it has come to be used in popular culture. DID JA KNOW? BBS-FYI 2:5 April 5, 1994 RESOURCES The BBS-FYI thanks Gary Bogart, co-author of the "Not Just Bibles" Internet resource guide, for the following: ------- Jesus' Witnesses is a new Internet listserv list and "support group for ex-Jehovah's (now Jesus') Witnesses, for open minded Jehovah's Witnesses who are mature enough to stand their own ground and exchange in a Christian manner with others and for those who have had dealings with or family in the WT organization. We wish to strive for the truth and understand more about our Biblical faith. All are welcome. There is no prerequisite for admission into this mail group. Here we can lovingly discuss the issues that affect our faith or concerns we have about others' practices and so on. The only requirement is that we be tolerant and respectful of others' feelings and convictions. There are several people on this mailing list currently. Everyone is anonymous unless they desire to share openly and publicly. If you wish to do so then respond with a brief biography of yourself and how you relate to the WT Society (if you do at all). If you prefer to remain anonymous and merely "lurk" then do not make a reply but sit back and enjoy the participant discussions. Should you know of someone who would like to be on the mailing list, please have them send an emailing as follows: SUBSCRIBE JESUS-WITNESSES-REQUEST or if you want out UNSUBSCRIBE JESUS-WITNESSES-REQUEST -- using the address: jesus-witnesses@world.std.com ------- Considering the wonderful element of anonymity that an online resource such as this provides the user, Jesus' Witnesses is perfect for JWs feeling the bondage of the Watchtower and wanting to dialog without fear regarding their the growing desire to break free. News of this resource should be given the widest possible distribution for the sake of these enslaved souls. Also, I just had to share this. The list moderator mentioned that he recently checked on a copy of Ray Franz's book, Crisis of Conscience, that he donated to the public library in his area years ago. He reported with joy that it had become very worn since then, indicating heavy use. I finally got around to calling the first LDS board I've seen so far. NUREL LISTSERVE NEWS AA07582; 29 Mar 1994 -- is an announcement for World Scripture: A Comparative Anthology of Sacred Texts published by The International Religious Foundation (914 pages). It is described as "an extraordinary reference work representing a new, holistic approach to understanding world religions. Commissioned in 1985, it required the labors of more than 40 scholars and religious leaders from every faith. World Scripture compares passages from the sacred writings of the world's great religions and all the significant issues of life: God, the purpose of life, sin, salvation, and the spiritual path, and demonstrates the vastness of spiritual common ground. World Scripture ... contains over 4000 scriptural passages, from 268 sacred texts and 55 oral traditions, organized in terms of 165 themes." Contact m.g.dastagir@phil.hull.ac.uk to communicate with the publisher. The listserv network BRIDGE-L@ucsbvm.bitnet is making it available in full text online as well. EMAIL BOX Debra Bouey sent us the following items she recently found online that are full text: -------- "CLOUT Acts Up At Re-Imagining Conference" -- re: the November 4-7, (1993) Re-Imagining Conference of the World Council of Churches Decade in Solidarity with Women. The article describes events at this conference which contributed to CLOUT gaining significant visibility and popularity. CLOUT stands for "Christian Lesbians OUT Together, an ecumenical movement celebrating the miracle of being Lesbian, OUT, and Christian." CLOUTreach (Fall 1993, Volume 2, Number 3). "Fundamentalists Slammed by Vatican on Bible Usage" -- an AP story which describes a "new Vatican document on how to interpret the Bible condemns the fundamentalist approach as distorting, dangerous and possibly leading to racism." A review by Massimo Introvigne, (Center for Studies on New Religiona, Torino, Italy) of Offenders For A Word: How Anti-Mormons Play Word Games To Attack The Latter-day Saints, by Daniel C. Petrerson & Stephen D. Ricks (no publisher noted). Mentions Stephen E. Robinson's Are Mormons Christians? You will also find, "The authors appear to be aware of the recent scholarship on this subject and of the difference between a secular anti-Mormon and a sectarian counter-Mormon movement, the later being divided into the classical camp chiefly represented by the late Walter Martin and by Jerald and Sandra Tanner (which regards Mormonism as heresy) and a more recent fringe, at times seemingly lunatic (including Ed Decker and William Schnoebelen), which prefers to see Mormonism as a product of the Devil, the 'true' author of Mormon revelations." Does a pretty convincing job of destroying the outfit's credibility. Debra Bouey found a rebuttal (apparently originating on CompuServe) and sent it in to us as well. Levicoff's file seems to have originated within America Online early last month. DOWNLOADS Whilst on CompuServe recently I discovered the full text for Consumer Reports' Jan '94 issue regarding its general treatment of Alternative Medicine and a specific report on Acupuncture. The entire file I downloaded is over 50K in size. Steve Ferrel, a Talbot student, recently sent CRI the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) list from the "alt.pagan" Internet newsgroup. BBS-FYI 2:6 April 19, 1994 RESOURCES Duane Magnani has done it again. This guy must never sleep. Now he's become the first in the countercult ministry community (to my knowledge) that has put out a CD-ROM. And it will likely become a trend for all of us. The platter holds the entire set of Studies in the Scriptures (1-7) with Tabernacle Shadows of the Better Sacrifices. $99 and it's yours, if you have a DOS machine. No CD drive? No problem. Add another $50 and you can have it on floppies. He's got other items on floppy as well. Witness Inc., (510) 672-7116 -- and tell 'em you read about it in the BBS-FYI. TELESTATS In a emailing dated March 28 to the entire America Online user base, president Steve Case reported: "Interest in AOL continues to grow at a remarkable pace. A year ago, we handled just over 2 million sessions each month. This month, we're handling nearly 12 million sessions -- so log-ons have increased by approximately 500% in the past year. That works out to an increase of more than 15% each month -- which means that AOL has been growing faster than any of the other major online services, and apparently even faster than the Internet itself!" Easy now, not quite. The Internet is growing at 20% per month from what I've read. Elsewhere, AOL is said to have over 700,000 subscribers presently. Access to Internet newsgroups has been opened as well. Thanks go to Ron Rhodes for passing on this one. NET NEWS Mac Craig, a current student under Norm Geisler, contacted me with news of yet another online periodical. I don't know much about the magazine yet, but Online Access (Dec '93, p37) ran a special report on "Religious Bulletin Boards" around the nation that turned up some interesting information. Mac sent me a photocopy of the piece. It only had one network listed under "Christianity," the cultic PRIME (Oneness Pentecostal) system. Under "Mormon" all it had was the Zion's Cache board mentioned in the previous issue of the BBS-FYI. A scad of boards were listed that carried the KERSHERNet Jewish system (kersher being "Hebrew for connection"). Included was the mention that this net carried a conference called JEWS4JUDAISM which had the description of "cult exit." Similarly, a smaller group of boards was listed that carried the Buddhist system DharmaNet. The Baha'i Net system only rated 17 boards. Only two "Islamic" boards were mentioned. The final entry was for a BBS operated by the Krishna Yoga Foundation (312) 743-6116. Online Access, (312) 573-1700, 900 North Franklin, Suite 310, Chicago, IL 60610. We would be happy to answer questions in CAT 7, as even though this is sort of long, there is still much more to it. BBS-FYI 2:7 April 26, 1994 NET NEWS Here's yet another Christian online service. The Christian Interactive Network, Inc. is a new subscriber-based private forum within CompuServe. As a result, CIN (an unfortunate phonetic) immediately has an international reach. The cost is $6.00 per month over the CompuServe monthly rate of $8.95. I was told by a CIN representative that since it is a non-profit organization, through an agreement with CompuServe, CIN comes to the user without an hourly charge and is part of CompuServe's Basic Services, 24 hours-a-day including downloads! Me thinks this has the makings of something that may really fly due to economics alone. (This is what made GEnie such a great deal before they revised their rates a year or so ago. GEnie's Religion RoundTable bulletin board WAS part of GEnie's basic services then. The CIN deal is even better because the GEnie file library had an hourly rate access charge, though, admittedly GEnie's $4.95 monthly charge at that time was better. Currently, GEnie charges about the same as CompuServe.) I was also told that CIN was launched the first of this month and that they only have 300+ members so far. The theological affiliation of the 30+ forums within CIN are "Christian" in a broadly defined sense. However, they have contracted Ravi Zacharias "for apologetics" I was told. Did that make you sit up? I don't know exactly what that means yet. But I have signed on and plan to give you a first-hand report once I've had a chance to snoop around. You can reach CIN at (800) 279-LORD.
